Take advantage of electives to cultivate your expertise in design for interaction, and design for services or social innovation. From working for a design consultancy to setting up your own studio, an MDes opens the door to a wide range of careers in design. You will have developed creative, theoretical and practical expertise which can directly lead to roles in fields including advertising, animation, graphic design, illustration, print-making, and production design for theatre/television/film, among others. However, design is a huge and diverse area of study, with many possible specializations. Popular areas include graphic design, industrial design, architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, product design, urban design (one of the newer fields) and more.

Fall Semester

Simultaneously, in the College of Environmental Design, you will learn practices and methods for design as a tool for societal change among architects, landscape architects, and city planners. MDes students are expected to complete , a professional development requirement for the program. Requires students to engage in an experience outside of an MDes course or studio where they apply what they have learned in a broader context. Experience typically takes place in the summer between the Spring and Fall semesters and is uniquely defined to align with students’ interests and career goals.

Please explore further information about the program’s four domains, MDes degree requirements, and related courses and faculty. And please join us for our Open House events to learn more about each of the domains and possible trajectories through them. Distinct from research in the sciences or humanities, design pedagogy involves highly interactive ways of thinking and learning that directly engage the technical, material, spatial, ecological, political, economic, and planetary dimensions of cultural life. Ultimately, MDes at the GSD challenges conventional ways of learning, and achieves a scope and diversity that are unmatched by any other design school in the world. Some European institutions award an undergraduate MDes degree. Like all European master degrees, this usually requires a four-year program with a research project or dissertation.

Data table cell values based on counts of respondents that fall below a predetermined threshold are deemed to be sensitive to potential disclosure, and the letter “D” indicates this type of suppression in a table cell. Imputation was not performed on critical items or on verbatim-based variables. In addition, for some missing demographic information, the NSCG imported the corresponding data from the ACS, which had performed its own imputation. Logical imputation was primarily accomplished as part of editing. In the editing phase, the answer to a question with missing data was sometimes determined by the answer to another question.

Major companies are Aravind mills, satva consulting, Myntra, target, Aditya Birla, etc. Students can get into visual design, brand management, graphic design, UI UX design, trend forecaster, etc. Be it working hard to bag a government job in the  design industry  or  getting an additional higher degree, both will increase one’s career prospect and will also open the gates for exploring in the foreign industry.

UC Berkeley has one of the strongest and most generous financial aid programs in the country... The Environmental Design Library is one of the premier architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning libraries in North America.

Successful applicants will normally have achieved a high level of undergraduate degree (equivalent to a 1st or 2.1 grade in the UK system), in a relevant subject. Some universities may also ask for details of earlier qualifications completed at secondary level. Graduates with a Master of Design should be well-equipped to interpret cultural and societal needs and trends, in order to develop the most appropriate formats, designs and multimedia to achieve a desired sensation or function. The Master Plan Program is not limited to large subdivisions.

You can peruse master’s theses from students in the School of Design online at KiltHub. This intensive program provides a pathway to advanced industry opportunities, whether you have a background in design and media practice or if you wish to enter these fields from other professional backgrounds. The MDes prepares students for these roles by connecting technical rigor, design theory and social practice. Over three semesters, students develop core skills in design process, prototyping and communication, as well as a critical lens on technology and design through a sequence of debate-focused seminars. Graduates leave the program as engaged and responsive social practitioners with a deep understanding of the foundations of design and emerging technology and an informed awareness of people, contextual needs and societal impacts. The MDes is considered to be a terminal degree in design, and graduates are poised to take on leading roles in professional practice worldwide.

Humble Design: Furnishing the Future of Local Families

humble design detroit

No one expects you to know everything, so ask for help. There is no shame in stating, ”I don’t now what I’m doing here.” In fact, vulnerability can be a point of strength. When people around you are asked for help, they become engaged in your mission and will help you carry the ball down the field. Surround yourself with people you like — they will become your safety net as well as your staff. To date, Humble Design has helped furnish the homes of 385 local families.

Humble Design: Furnishing the Future of Local Families

We opened in Chicago this past year and are thankful to have partnered with CB2 (Crate and Barrel) to provide the much needed funding. We are working on our newest site in Dearborn, which will service veterans exclusively. Recently, a Microsoft employee held a fundraiser which provided us funding to expand to Seattle as well. San Diego is our fifth city and is expected to be up and running by the third quarter of this year. Temporarily unable to proceed with furnishing individual homes, Humble Design's new mission is to assist the shelters directly by delivering much-needed warehouse goods at a time when these safe havens are overrun. After the intake process, Humble Design schedules the client for the “deco day,” which can be up to three to four weeks out.

Williams, the number-one draft pick by the Chicago Bears, was one of the many prospective players that stood out for his unique style. The quarterback went with a custom Chrome Hearts suit designed with a side zipper detail and several cross motifs. Williams stated he went with the navy hue to represent the Chicago Bears’ team color. Athletes such as Caleb Williams, Marvin Harrison Jr., Darius Robinson, Terrion Arnold and many others used the NFL Draft as a platform to showcase their personal style Thursday night in Detroit. I love to set trends and not worry too much about what people think.

Now onto your personal style…

And that was the best move I ever made because the first class I signed up for was advertising, where I met my husband, Rob. Rob moved down to Miami for a job; I stayed in New York and graduated, then followed him to Miami where we both worked in advertising for nine years. I moved to Michigan in 2008 with my husband Rob and two children, Henson and Tuesday. We instantly felt a strong kinship to Detroit and the desire to help the community was none that we had known before. Those interested in helping Humble Designs can donate furniture items and money, as well as volunteer their time.

DETROIT, Aug. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The non-profit organization Humble Design continues to make a difference by disrupting the cycle of homelessness and improving the odds – and lives – of one at-risk family at a time. Our home makeovers provide a foundation that generates an immediate focus on self-empowerment and long-term stability. I was born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in San Diego. I grew up in a household where it was extremely important to get a good education and to choose a field where you could succeed in life.

“We want families to feel good about the homes that they’re living in and themselves so they can live happy, stable, dignified lives, the way many of us do and many of us take for granted. So if people have things that they can donate, please, there’s a lot of great organizations. The Furniture Bank is one of them, Humble Design is another, and there’s all kinds of others out there.

Of course funding is a challenge for most nonprofits, but our biggest challenge was that Humble Design became a logistics nightmare. We recycle 500,000 pounds of furniture a year out of our Pontiac location alone. Our challenge was simply managing and moving all that furniture! We are lucky to have partnered with U-Haul who has provided their trucks and donated warehouse space.

Humble Design has served nearly 1,450 families nationally through its chapters in Detroit, Chicago, Seattle and San Diego. Our Welcome Home event generates vital funding to help families in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, individuals, and veterans who are emerging from homelessness. At Humble Design, we know that a house is not a home without a warm bed and a place to gather with family. Our home makeovers change an entire mindset, generating an immediate focus on self-empowerment and long-term stability. With your support, Humble Design can help set families on a course towards a bright and hopeful future.

On Friday, Humble Design will provide charitable services to its 2,000th client emerging from a homeless shelter. Your ticket purchase directly supports Humble Design's mission of transforming lives by fully furnishing the homes of families, individuals and veterans emerging from homelessness. We change lives and communities by custom designing and fully furnishing home interiors for individuals, families and veterans emerging from homelessness.

Humble Design partners with local area homeless and abuse shelters, including Grace Center of Hope, Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing, The Empowerment Plan, Habitat for Humanity, Community Housing Network and many others. Clients are referred for services via a social worker, and families fill out a questionnaire so designers can hit the ground running when it comes to furnishing their home. The interior of Arnold’s suit jacket garnered equal attention on the red carpet.

So we called the shelters, (COTS, Haven, SOS) — nine shelters in total — and we said we have all this stuff, and we don’t want it to go to a place where people have to purchase the items, we don’t want it to be resold to fund programs. We want our donations to go directly to families who are in need in Detroit, and we don’t want them to have to pay for delivery. Welcome Home generates vital funding to help families in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, individuals, and veterans who are emerging from homelessness.

25 Stylish Pergola Ideas to Shelter Your Backyard

design pergola

Combine a variety of garden lighting ideas, and string up fairy lights, dot about some lanterns, or even hang pendant lights from the beams – it's all about layering. Choose solar-powered lights that are super budget-friendly, yet sure to look gorgeous as they glow amongst the foliage. For a pergola idea that really blends into the garden opt for a roof made from natural materials. You can pick up reed screens from DIY stores and just secure them in between the beams of your pergola structure.

Extend Your Porch Space

The assembled dimensions are the pergola’s measurements that will take up space, not just the area that provides shade or coverage. For example, the rafters of the roof of the pergola usually protrude a bit so it’s important to take these dimensions into account when measuring your space. There's room for a seating area or dining set for four to six people, and the vinyl pergola requires just a quick wash down with a hose when it gets dirty. Low maintenance, it comes with a 20-year limited warranty for the structure and five years for the louvered panels against material defects. For a color pop, Peaceful Patios will paint your pergola in any Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore paint colors.

Pergola for Plants and Vines

The pergola ideas found on this page provide a variety of different design styles, sizes, and layouts to help you find the style you love. We're all about mixing up our pergola styles and we love the look of a square top frame. The modern structure and chic white finish bring the look of this outdoor space together really nicely. From the outdoor fireplace idea to the stunning furniture and other decorative accents, it's a simple but effective addition. Refresh your outdoor living space with a stylish sunshade that adds a dimension of texture. This is one of the most sensible pergola ideas if one of your main aims is to provide sun protection.

This pergola maximizes shade by extending into Saladino's pool without hiding the property's best views of Santa Ynez mountains. This Greco-Roman style pergola offers Mediterranean flair while still remaining as timeless as ancient Greek and Roman architecture itself. Get playful with your seating choices, considering most pergolas can support the weight of a porch swing.

While some pergolas are retractable, you can add roofing material to make the structure more permanent. Interior designer Jessica Risko Smith elevates the space with wicker seating with blue cushions and white round tables. This wood pergola is a quite high and spacious, giving is a very open and airy feel. Its wooden posts were fixed on the ground to keep it stable, and has wood slats on top to keep it nice and shady during sunny days.

Screw them in place one at a time from the backside of each beam, aligning them with your marks. Once all the 2×10 beams are in place, cut your 1×2 ledgers and screw them 1/2 in. Screw the beam (E) to the wood plug so it’s flush with the front outside edge of the column. Screw the other beam in place and then the other three intermediate beams, F1 and F2.

Veikous Cedar Wood Pergola

A casual bench is a defining edge for the pergola and an extra seating spot. A pergola attached to the house creates a convenient shaded oasis for patio areas just outside the back door. This pergola idea extends the roof outward to stretch the shade under the eaves. Integrate the structure into your home's exterior using similar materials and colors found elsewhere. The cost of a pergola can vary significantly based on factors like size, materials, design complexity, and any additional features or customization.

Lauren Wicks is a freelance writer and editor based in Birmingham, Alabama. Before going on her own, Lauren worked for brands such as VERANDA, EatingWell, and Cooking Light, and she covers all things lifestyle from interior design and luxury travel to wine and wellness. Leave it to John Saladino, pioneer of harmonizing modernism and classicism, to dream up this stunning backyard in his Montecito, California, home.

Building a pergola can be a simple to challenging building project depending on what plan you pick so make sure you know your skill level before starting. All the free pergola plans include building instructions, lists of tools and materials that you'll need, diagrams, and photos. If you like these pergola plans, you can find many free plans for arbors, gazebos, sheds, and so much more. Once constructed, this exquisite pergola will be 12 feet wide and 16 feet long.

It was wired with electrical conduit to hang string lights for night time entertaining and enjoyment. Its large wooden posts were fixed on a concrete and faux masonry base, keeping it stable and durable. Since the area is to be used as an outdoor lounging / living /dining area, garden lights and a ceiling fan were also installed to keep its users comfortable. This area was framed with a solid wood pergola which features 2 square pergolas and a “hallway” which uses the two structures on each of its ends as its base/support. The wood used are salvaged wood pieces so it has a very rough and weathered appeal to it the looks perfect with the natural style pool. To follow the simplicity of the architecture, the pergola was built using white-painted concrete columns, and topped with white-painted wooden beams and trusses.

L. Daniela Alvarez is a contributing writer for Better Homes & Gardens with three years of experience specifically writing lifestyle content and product reviews for a variety of publications. For this article, she spent several hours researching the best pergolas and reading customer reviews. She also consulted Coleman Cosby, project Manager and construction expert at Yardzen, and Jamie Irwin, editor and landscape designer at Windproof Gazebos. When thinking about the best pergola for your outdoor space, you’ll also want to consider your area’s climate as different materials may be more suitable for specific types of weather.

This stylish metal design makes a great spot for outdoor dining on this backyard’s wood deck. By hanging curtains from the sides families can have more intimate dinner parties or game nights. With the addition of a canopy shade, this fixture can provide more shade for hotter days.

And an on-trend pergola is a simple garden idea you can’t go wrong with. If pergola designs include building close to the house, first measure the projection of your eaves. Farther from the house than this measurement to accurately position the column centers near but not too close to the house. Drive remote stakes an equal distance from the house, attaching a string to help mark and align the outer post locations.

A sitooterie or sitootery can also take the forms of pavilions, pergolas, or a small enclosed patio. This large, expansive design serves as a walkway and a semi-cover around the pool area for those who want to lounge and relax. It uses solid cypress wood with a nice natural orange color the matches perfectly with the garden & pool concept. Like the trellis, this style of fretwork provides an area for creeping vines and other plants to crawl along at, therefore making it look magical & romantic. This allows the area to be furnished with comfortable furniture pieces. It uses solid wood in a dark mahogany finish and tops the trellis with a clear sheet of polycarbonate to keep the rain and leaves, and filter some of the sunlight.

The top does not have a fabric or polycarbonate, but it does have diagonal slats of wood for a subtle sun shade/filter during sunny days. Another great example of a modern covered patio pergola that attaches directly to the outer walls of the house & was designed to match the architectural design. This modern design is draped with hanging vines and is nestled within a beautiful green garden. It features an outdoor fireplace with synthetic rattan outdoor furniture. This inviting patio features a wood circular design with sitting area and a semi-circle planter with flowering plants. The round concrete patio is framed by grass and is large enough to make a great backyard entertaining spot.

The six-bedroom, eight-bathroom house is at the end of a cul-de-sac, where Loughlin and Giannulli have fixed up the grounds with a dozen mature olive trees. The house reportedly first hit the market in February at $1.499 million ... These days, the house boasts a fresh coat of white paint with a black trim along the side. A small, but sunny front porch juts out into a modest front yard. The front of the structure is completely rebuilt too ... "A lot of people refer to this as a revival of this town," Tabbone adds.

In 2021, a group of young professionals in Cammarata, Sicily, started a nonprofit called StreetTo, which works with the city to advertise 1-euro and cheap houses to foreigners. So far, the program has attracted a handful of young people and couples who move to the town to work remotely, says volunteer Martina Giracello, 31. With more foreign home investors and visitors come higher real estate costs. As the demand for previously worthless homes has increased, Nigrelli says, the price of homes for sale and for rent have risen by up to 100%. Meanwhile, there are over 100 premium houses currently on the market, Milazzo says.

On one of the final days of the auction, Tabbone placed her bid of 5,555 euros for a property, sight unseen. The 1-euro campaign was first proposed in 2008 by TV personality Vittorio Sgarbi, then the mayor of Salemi in southern Sicily, where homes were destroyed in a 1968 earthquake. Those with construction skills and a bit of ingenuity — like Augusto — build their own shelters on whatever strip of unused or discarded land they can commandeer. LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An intruder was arrested after breaking in to the Los Angeles mayor's official residence early Sunday morning, officials say. Conversions from euros to USD were done using the OANDA conversion rate of 1 euro to 1.05 USD on Oct 18, 2023. She's in favor of schemes like the 1-euro home program. Large-scale renovations mean more jobs for carpenters, plumbers, electricians and other construction workers.

Tabbone flew to see her new home for the first time in June 2019. She then bought the building next door through a private sale with the owner for 22,000 euros, or just over $23,000. About an hour's drive from Mussomeli is the town of Sambuca di Sicilia. In 2019, it went viral for auctioning off old homes with bids starting at 1 euro.

Some of these homes are "Hot Homes," meaning they're likely to sell quickly. This map is refreshed with the newest listings in California every 15 minutes. From the adobes of the Southwest to the saltboxes of the Northeast, take a rollicking tour through America’s architectural history while perusing the most beautiful historical homes for sale in every state.

Yoakum House for sale in Los Angeles, California. Built in 1915, Tudor style, coffered ceilings, large pocket doors, hand-carved fireplaces, 8 bedrooms, 6140 square feet. About a mile away stands the Arroyo Seco Tiny Home Village, with 117 cabins that are intended to act as transitional housing. Two other tiny villages, also located in the council district represented by Councilman Kevin de León, are similarly meant to act as a steppingstone to permanent housing. De León’s office did not respond to requests for comment about the encampments along the Arroyo Seco.

“I’ve found some nice people here by the river and freeway,” she said as she walked along the channel, where river rocks poked through the concrete. Occasionally, he finds work as a day laborer, but it’s not a stable source of income. Still, he knows that other unhoused residents lost their temporary shelters when the city conducted encampment sweeps. In a city of multimillion-dollar houses and celebrity estates, Cesar Augusto’s home stands apart.

Exposed brick chimneys, original hard wood floors, a historic home lover’s dream. This could become a problem for incoming homebuyers purchasing old properties and renting places to stay during renovations. On the other hand, Nigrelli estimates roughly 90% of Mussomeli residents already own their homes, so rising real estate prices have a smaller immediate impact on locals. He decided to sell his house back to the real estate agency for 1 euro and found a different space to rent in the town square. His charity, The Good Kitchen, now operates from the space next door, where rent and utilities run 400 euros a month. In the late 2010s, towns around Italy started going viral for selling off crumbling properties for 1 euro, or roughly $1.05.

Many of them are being sold by families who've moved away or inherited multiple properties and see an influx of interested foreigners as an opportunity to make a profit. Even if prospective homebuyers or curious tourists don't settle on a property to purchase, the increase in foot traffic has led to a boost for local restaurants, hotels and retail stores. Mussomeli's tourism sector increased by 3,000% within the first year of launching the 1-euro home program, according to Nigrelli. Toti Nigrelli, Mussomeli's deputy mayor who oversees the program, credits the town's success to a user-friendly website that lays out exactly how interested homebuyers can schedule a tour and get started. Tens of thousands of requests came in "immediately" after the site launched in 2017, he says. The town made its first 1-euro sale to a Belgian visitor within two weeks.

A 2024 Guide to White Papers

white paper design

All the work you’ve put in with the research and writing can be ruined with a silly typo in a heading or a duplicated sentence. White papers are meant to be informative, full of value and well-researched. And there’s no better way to support your findings than with solid data. The example below shows how the main topic page is divided into subtopics. This page could work as an opener for a more extended section, which will be separated into three subsections, mirroring the first page.

Check out how this example uses plenty of white space on nearly every page. An easy way to bring attention to important points is to place an icon beside the text. But the icons help direct the eye to each section header and break up the text.

Make your page numbers stand out so your white paper is easy to scan

When you’re designing a multi-page document like a white paper or a report, your pages should have a cohesive look and flow. Good policy white paper examples include a brief description of the scope of a problem or issue to be discussed, alongside recommendations. Governmental organizations write white papers to outline policies before proposing new bills and legislations. A white paper is a good tool for gathering feedback from the public before implementing wide-reaching policy changes. Photos help create a connection between the information in your white paper and your reader.

Highlight key takeaways to summarize the information in your white paper

It’s a great document to showcase a company’s expertise in the field and to win over investors. A white paper can also be used for marketing purposes and brand awareness (which I’ll discuss in the next section). Not only can you address your white paper readers by name, but you can highlight different sections of your content based on their industry, role, or other available data. Solidify that personal connection through photography, graphics or video explicitly created for the white paper. No matter which white paper template you decide to use or develop on your own, be sure to make good use of it. White papers are valuable content types for all customer demographics and effective lead gen tools — but only if they are high quality and targeted.

white paper design

Before making your white paper engaging, you first need to make it informative and credible. After all, it’s an important document to establish you as a thought leader in your industry. A stark contrast to the red accent color, we have a cool color scheme with blues and greens for this organizational design white paper example. This is a great color scheme to use for a more creative industry or topic.

Trying heading over to Pinterest and searching “white paper templates.” You’ll get tons of results for white papers of all kinds. You can check out their site for the full complement of white paper templates. You can access some with a free account, while others require a premium account.

Q. How Do You Start Writing a Whitepaper?

Companies can also use white papers to show that their product or service can best solve their customers’ problems. Of course, they still need to back their claims with research and evidence. Even if your white paper has valuable information, a lot of text might make it difficult for readers to absorb everything. If you're looking for a quick and easy way to create white papers, there's no better tool than Visme. Each of the images in the template has a dark blue color overlay atop it to ensure it fits in well with the overall design. You can easily customize the color overlay color in the Visme editor if you decide to switch up the color scheme.

What is the Difference Between a White Paper and a Report?

When you produce content, you ideally want readers to share your assets with others. White papers, as the Demand Gen Report found, are actually the most likely type of content to be shared with colleagues. The results of a survey that asked over 500 marketing professionals about event planning in the face of worldwide uncertainty can be found in this paper. This is another whitepaper that uses a pay/information wall, which positions their white paper as a method for gettting capital. The more touchpoints you create, the more likely it is that potential customers will read your white paper.

You can also embed your content on a website using a snippet of code. Once you’re done, you can download your white paper in your preferred format, such as PDF or HTML5, share it with a link or embed it on your website. To start using Venngage's free white paper maker, sign up for free using your email, Facebook or Gmail account. Tell us about yourself and your design style preferences so we can optimize our template recommendations for you. You can unlock more professional design features by subscribing to a Premium or Business plan.

As a result, the reading experience is enhanced and sharing on social media platforms is made easier. A white paper typically looks like a document with 8-12 pages starting with an eye-catching cover page and an enticing title. If you’re looking for visual examples of white papers, check out this list, where we share a wide variety of white paper examples. White papers began as text-heavy government documents used to inform and educate policymakers. Today, we use white papers in many industries, including sales and marketing. The value of the design and overall look of white papers has increased over time, and now companies style and format white papers in a myriad of ways.

It’s important to design and brand your white paper to draw attention and build credibility. Maintain consistency with the company image by following brand guidelines on color, font, and images. A professional and polished appearance will build trust with your audience and give your paper an authoritative feel. Design social media posts right in Visme using your Brand Kit and the visuals from your white paper. Try placing the cover page of your white paper into an iPad mockup, so people know that you’re promoting a digital reading product in your post. Thankfully, there are dozens of white paper templates available online that you can simply customize according to your needs.

This title also uses the adjective ‘alarming’ as a support word that makes the title more interesting without sounding exaggerated. Their research will probably prove just how alarming the spread of dengue is, so this is a perfect word choice. Jot down ideas and important points you need to cover under each section. If you’re copying quotes and statements from thought leaders and experts in the field, be sure to mention them by name. Here, you can see headings and subheadings used with small graphics to draw the eye to the different text sections.
